Dr. Allan
Peterkin
SENIOR
CLINICIAN SCIENTIST
Dr. Allan Peterkin is a Professor, Psychiatry, University of
Toronto.
The major themes of Dr. Peterkin’s research are linked to
therapeutic writing and to the role of narrative competence and
reflective capacity in healthcare for both
clinicians/learners/providers and patients.
His teaching philosophy emphasizes the role of the arts, social
sciences and humanities in nurturing reflective capacity, narrative
competence, critical thinking, visual literacy, inter-professional
collaboration and wellness/self-care in students across all clinical
fields.
His own writing has explored themes of physician wellness, cultural
history, the patient voice and human sexuality. He is the author of
sixteen books for adults and children, including textbooks on physician
wellbeing and on the medical care of sexual minorities, and he has
published short fiction, poetry, book reviews and essays, which explore
cultural, medical and psychological themes.
Dr. Peterkin is a founding editor of Ars Medica: A Journal of
Medicine, the Arts, and Humanities. He has published poetry, fiction
and critical essays on narrative medicine and the use of the humanities
in medical education in Canadian and international journals.
