Dr. Terence Colgan

Dr. Colgan is a surgical and cyto-pathologist with primary interests in gynecological pathology and the prevention and detection of gynecological cancer.

He is head of the sections of Gynecological Pathology and Cytopathology, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Professor, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, University of Toronto.

Dr. Colgan graduated with an MD from the University of Toronto and undertook additional training at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (Washington, DC), McMaster University and Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Colgan has recently served as Chair of the Curriculum Committee, College of American Pathologists and is a past member of the Executive Board, American Society of Cytopathology, a past Chair of the Canadian Society of Cytology and a past President, Sociey of Canadian Colposcopists.

Dr. Colgan’s studies in gynecologic cytology have focused on the evaluation of the potential benefits and limitations of new visual intelligence and molecular technologies. The Toronto endometrial proteomic initiative used a discovery-based proteomic research program to identify and validate novel biomarkers of endometrial carcinoma. These protein biomarkers may lead to new methods of screening, diagnosis, and monitoring of this disease. Surgical pathologic studies of prophylactic oophorectomy specimens have lead to novel insights into the pathogenesis of ovarian carcinoma, and the management of women with familial ovarian carcinoma.

He consults on a regular basis nationally and internationally in the area of cancer control, and recently collaborated on new guidelines for classifying tumours of the female reproductive organs for the World Health Organization. He also consults for industry, holds two patents and is a member of the Medical Advisory Board for a biotechnology company.

He has authored nearly 150 peer-reviewed primary publications.
